Dr. Ghassan Elkahlout, Director of the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies (CHS), participated in the dialogue “Transitional Justice in Contemporary Conflict Resolution”, organised by Wilton Park in partnership with the International Nuremberg Principles Academy. The event was held in the United Kingdom from 8 to 10 July 2026 and brought together a distinguished group of policymakers and international experts in peacebuilding, mediation, and transitional justice.
The discussion focused on the future of transitional justice amid current shifts in the international landscape and ways of integrating it into mediation and conflict-resolution processes. It also addressed challenges associated with transitional justice mechanisms and financing models, as well as the role of new actors in strengthening accountability and achieving sustainable peace. Participants examined contemporary cases, including Syria, Ukraine and Colombia, to identify lessons and develop more effective approaches to transitional justice in modern conflicts.
Commenting on his participation, Dr. Elkahlout emphasised that the changing nature of contemporary conflicts requires a reconsideration of approaches to transitional justice, particularly in ways that strengthen its integration with mediation and sustainable peacebuilding efforts, address the root causes of conflict, and support the achievement of a just and lasting peace.
Dr. Elkahlout’s participation forms part of the CHS’s efforts to strengthen its presence in international dialogues and contribute to advancing discussions and approaches relating to peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and transitional justice.
