The Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies (CHS) contributed to discussions on international humanitarian law and sustainable peace at the Global Security Forum 2026 in Doha. As part of the forum, CHS Director Dr. Ghassan Elkahlout chaired a roundtable titled “International Humanitarian Law and Peace: From Protecting Humanity to Sustaining Peace," organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on 20 October.
The roundtable explored the protection afforded by international humanitarian law, the challenges of fulfilling legal obligations during armed conflict, and the contribution of neutral and impartial humanitarian action to civilian protection and prospects for peace.
Speakers included Dr. Sara Hamad Al-Qarah, Head of the Legal Skills Department at the College of Law, Qatar University; Dr. Ahmed Essa Al-Sulaiti, a lawyer admitted to practise before the Appellate Court in Qatar and a lecturer at the College of Law, Hamad Bin Khalifa University; and Dr. Tristan Ferraro, Senior Legal Adviser in the Legal Division at ICRC headquarters in Geneva. Drawing on his expertise in conflict management and humanitarian action, the CHS Director guided the discussion on the relationship between humanitarian protection and efforts to sustain peace.
The Global Security Forum brings together policymakers, practitioners, and experts to address pressing international security challenges. CHS's participation reflects its commitment to connecting research, policy, and practice in support of conflict resolution and humanitarian action. Based in Doha, the Center produces research and supports dialogue on conflict mediation, humanitarian action, and post-conflict recovery.
