The Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies is hosting a webinar entitled "Conventional Humanitarianism Under Siege: Rethinking Protection Mechanisms in the Case of Gaza" on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, starting at 9:00 AM via Zoom. The Webinar will be presented by Amjad Shawa، General Director – Palestinian NGOS Network, Ghassan Elkahlout, Director – Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, and Hossam Elsharkawi – The Regional Director for Middle East and North Africa at IFRC .
This webinar explores the systemic failures of protection mechanisms under the conventional humanitarian approach, using Gaza as a critical case study. Rooted in the classical Dunantist paradigm, the international humanitarian system continues to emphasize the role of international organizations and the principles of neutrality, impartiality, independence, and humanity. Yet, the war in Gaza revealed that this approach is insufficient in ensuring the secured access of civilians to aid and the safety of aid workers, thus obstructing life-saving aid efforts.
Amid deliberate aid obstruction, targeting of humanitarian workers, and the paralysis of international organizations, this session brings together experts, practitioners, and researchers to critically reflect on the operational and structural limitations of the current humanitarian architecture and to explore alternative and more adaptive models for protection in protracted crises and asymmetric conflicts.
