On Monday 3 October 2022, the Center for Conflict and humanitarian Studies will host a symposium on "Sudan in Transition: Charting a Pathway to Renewed Civilian Rule". It will take place in the Main Auditorium- Cultural Foundation – Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, at 17:00 Doha Time (GMT+3).

In April 2019 the former Sudanese president was removed from power following a popular revolution. After three years of a transitional period in Sudan, the democratic transition in Sudan has lost its way. This is due to various obstacles, the most important of which was control of power by the armed forces and the failure of the national dialogue, which continue to occur in the midst civilian protests against military rule.

Against this backdrop, the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies (CHS) continues to engage with a wide range of actors in Sudanese affairs in order to support a Sudanese-led process of developing a coherent vision to revitalize the democratic transition. The symposium comes in line with the commitment of CHS to promoting constructive dialogue.

The symposium will begin with opening remarks delivered by Dr. Ghassan Elkahlout, CHS Director. It will consist of two sessions with the participation of a group of activists and academics from Sudan. The topics of the first session will include consideration of the national state in Sudan, some features of the legacy of state weakness, in addition to the Sudanese political structure and its contribution to the continuation of political division. The session will be moderated by Mrs. Nafisa Hajar, Vice President of the Darfur Bar Association.

First Session Panelists:

  • Dr. Mohamed Yousif Ahmed Almustafa, Professor at the University of Khartoum.
  • Ms. Hala Yassin Elkarib,  Executive Director of the Horn of Africa Women's Network.

The topics of the second session will focus on the issue of achieving political and economic stability, and the absence of a coherent and clear vision on the part of the regional and international communities towards the political transition process as a result of the intersections of interests, and the need for an integrated strategy for dealing with the Sudanese issue. The session will be moderated by Mrs. Sarah Issa, an activist on issues of democratic transition.

Second Session Panelists:

  • Ms. Racha Awad, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Tagheer electronic newspaper.
  • Mr. Ahmed Alhaj, Political and civil activist for the Democracy Initiative.
